Learning Through Change

Change is part of life and part of learning. In our Learn as We Grow curriculum, children explore change to notice the beauty of growth, seasons, and the world around them. This big idea, also highlighted in the Next Generation Science Standards, which inspires some of our lessons, helps children build curiosity and confidence as they observe how things transform.

When children learn to recognize and embrace change, they become more flexible, resilient, and ready for new experiences. Research shows that resilient children have more tools available to navigate challenges throughout life. In our schools, to prepare children for the future, teachers highlight moments of change, such as watching the weather shift, plants grow, or routines evolve. They invite children to talk, wonder, and celebrate what they notice.

How Children Experience Change

  • Toddlers: Teachers point out simple changes that take place during everyday activities, including turning off the music or transitioning from playtime to snack time.
    • At home: Name these changes as they happen. “We turned the light off, and now it’s dark.”
  • Twos: Teachers guide children to notice common changes in themselves, such as learning a new skill or growing taller.
    • At home: Measure your child’s height against a wall or growth chart or practice a new skill (like zipping a coat) and celebrate the progress they make.
  • Preschoolers: Teachers set up experiments, such as melting ice or mixing colors, to spark intentional before-and-after discoveries.
    • At home: Slice an apple and watch how it changes color over time. Try dipping another slice in lemon juice and compare the difference.
  • Pre-K: Teachers encourage children to ask why changes happen, from shorter daylight hours to the life cycles of plants and animals.
    • At home: Compare old and new photos and talk about how your child has grown or how the landscape has evolved.

Change is all around. Noticing it together makes everyday moments meaningful. When you celebrate change with your child, you’re helping them grow curious, confident, and excited for what comes next.
